Frequently Asked Questions

Art wall text (also called wall labels, tombstone labels, or didactic text) is the informational text displayed next to artworks in galleries and museums. It typically includes the artist's name, title, medium, date, dimensions, and sometimes interpretive descriptions.

A standard exhibition wall label includes: Artist name, Artwork title (italicized), Date of creation, Medium/materials, Dimensions, Collection credit line. Extended labels may also include interpretive text and provenance.

Use "Artist Unknown" or "Unidentified Artist", followed by the cultural origin and approximate date. Example: "Unidentified Artist, Oaxaca, Mexico, c. 1850."

The AAM recommends a minimum of 18pt for body text and 24pt+ for titles, based on a standard viewing distance of 3–4 feet. ADA guidelines require larger sizes for public institutions.

Common methods include vinyl lettering (cut from SVG files), printed adhesive labels, foam board prints, and direct wall printing. Our tool exports production-ready SVG/PDF files compatible with all these methods.
